For President's Day, we're doing an Abraham Lincoln double feature with possibly the two best movies on Lincoln made by two of the best directors America has ever produced.
First up we screen the all-time classic Henry Fonda starring Young Mr. Lincoln directed by John Ford in that all-important Hollywood year of 1939. Young Mr. Lincoln is Ford at his most disarming. It actually focuses on the story of a semi-fictional court case young lawyer Abe Lincoln takes on in his youth when he hangs his shingle in Springfield, Illinois. Still nursing heartbreak over the death of his first love, Ann Rutledge, we see Lincoln hone his skills as a speaker, a lawyer, a politician, and meet Mary Todd who will go on to be his wife.
Young Mr. Lincoln is filled with beautiful Ford touches and a wonderfully calibrated Henry Fonda performance pitched somewhere between truly awkward and humble and secretly intelligent and performative. We see John Ford here doing what he has done better than any other director-both CELEBRATING and RE-EXAMINING American history.
We follow this up with the Tony Kushner adaptation of Doris Kearn Goodwin's Team of Rivals, LINCOLN, the movie that won Daniel Day Lewis his third Academy Award as Best Actor.
Spielberg had initially wanted to tackle Goodwin's entire book about Lincoln's presidency but soon discovered such a film project would have to be hours and hours long. With the help of Kushner, Spielberg chooses to focus on JUST the passing of the 13th Amendment. The results yield one of Spielberg's absolutely best movies. Daniel Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, even James Spader (!!) all bite into their roles with relish and we get to see how the sausage is really made in Washington DC. Lincoln uses all his levers of power to abolish slavery including underhanded strong arm tactics, lies, and dodges.
It's an incredible movie and a worthy bookend to Ford's classic 1939 picture. So come join us on President's Day to celebrate our greatest president in the two best movies ever made about his life.
Best always,
