7:30pm THELMA & LOUISE (1991, dir. Ridley Scott, Warner Bros., USA, 129mns, 35mm)

10pm BOUND (1996, dir. The Wachowskis, Columbia, USA, 108mns, Digital)

We close out our The Heart Want series with two movies that mix the sweet and savory themes we’ve been playing with all month. Both deal with female friendship, intimacy, and defy expectation in their representations of female sexuality and identity.

First off, we screen the early 1990’s classic Thelma and Louise directed by Ridley Scott. A fascinating, complicated, exhilarating, disturbing road trip movie written by Callie Khouri (who won an Academy Award for the screenplay), Thelma and Louise follows two friends – practical and independent Louise (Susan Sarandon) and married, frustrated Thelma – as they set out on a road trip weekend. But when Louise shoots Thelma’s would-be rapist in a bar parking lot, the two go on the lamb for fear that no one will believe their story.

A fascinating movie with an all-star cast that includes a great sympathetic Harvey Keitel (re-teaming with Scott after Scott’s debut The Duellists) as Arkansas State Police Investigator Hal Slocumb hot in pursuit, Brad Pitt (whose career exploded after this role) as bad boy criminal J.D., Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, among others.

But the movie is ultimately a two-hander between Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in two of the best roles of their careers. A movie written by a woman about women, Louise and Thelma don’t fit any stereotypes but rather feel like living breathing real characters full of their own contradictions, strengths, and shortcomings.

And we’re showing it on 35mm!

We follow it with the Wachowskis’ debut feature Bound. A Neo-noir heavily influenced by Billy Wilder, Bound tells the story of the budding romance between Corky (Gina Gershon) and Violet (Jennifer Tilly in what she considers her best role) as they band together to steal $2 million from the mob and Violet’s domineering Mafia boss boyfriend Caeser (Joe Pantoliano in what he considers his best role).

The Wachowskis were well ahead of their time (as they often have been) by hiring intimacy coordinator Susie Bright to make sure Gershon and Tilly felt comfortable in their love scenes and to make sure the love scenes were realistic to a lesbian relationship.

At the same time, the Wachowskis also worked to make a wildly entertaining movie filled with noir elements and violence. Thus setting a template they’ve mostly followed their entire career of working to blend subversive themes with straight ahead entertainments in genre containers.

So come see where it all started. With this straight up mid-90’s noir that sees the Wachowskis at the very beginning of their career.

Best always,
