7:30pm SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (1999, dir. Trey Parker, Paramount, USA, 81mns, 35mm)

9:10pm A Medley of SOUTH PARK Musical Episodes ("Chef Aid" Season 2, Episode 14, "A Ladder to Heaven" Season 6, Episode 12, "Christian Rock Hard" Season 7, Episode 9, "The Ring" Season 13, Episode 1 - Digital)

We kick off our March Musical Madness series with one of the greatest musicals of the last 25 years: South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Within 81 minutes, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and everyone involved manage not only to make a hilarious comedy about how American parents launch a war on Canada (rather than taking ownership for bad parenting choices) but also a near wall to wall musical.

When South Park came out in 1999, everyone was ready for it to be foul mouthed, inappropriate, and definitely rated HARD R. What no one was ready for was that Parker and Stone would incorporate their love of musicals and offer spot on parodies of Broadway classics like Les Miserables and recent Disney musicals like The Little Mermaid.

One of the great movies of the 1990’s (it also includes a hilarious cameo by George Clooney, an LGBTQ relationship between Satan and Sadam Hussein, and Conan O Brien plummeting to his death out of shame), South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut showed that Parker and Stone had a genius that could not be bounded by the four corners of the television screen.

We follow this up with a four episode medley of some of South Park the TV show’s greatest musical moments. Parker and Stone have never shied away from combining their love of music with their love of scorching satire. In fact, that’s part of the South Park special sauce. In an episode like "A Ladder to Heaven", they take on all the musicians who capitalized on the tragedy of 9-11 to sell records. In "Christian Rock", they point out how Christian themed music can drive sales and the artists behind the records can be way more cynical than people think. In "The Ring", one of their most controversial (and hilarious) episodes (and an episode that enraged Disney), they point out that teenage boy bands are often manipulated by their corporate owners to sell sex to pre-pubescent girls under the guise of “wholesome” entertainment.

So if you’ve got a jones for hilarious satire and surprisingly good music, join us for this double header by a team that does it better than almost anyone else.

Best always,
