It’s going to be Father’s Day tomorrow. And instead of buying Dad a well-meaning tie or book about fathers…give him the good stuff. The gift he’ll cherish and remember for a lifetime.
You know what I’m talking about: action movies.
First up, we’re showing the 2008 surprise hit starring Liam Neeson, Taken. Nobody but nobody saw what a monster hit this movie would be. And they should have! Liam Neeson is an international gem.
Here Neeson plays ex-special forces single dad, Bryan Mills, who is trying to turn his life around and be more of a present father for his 17-year-old daughter Kim.
But when Kim gets kidnapped in Paris, Bryan suddenly finds that the covert-ops lifestyle that caused his divorce and estrangement from his family is exactly the “special set of skills” that might save his daughter’s life.
This is one of those action movies you actually can’t believe hadn’t been thought of until 2008. Spy father saves his daughter (I suppose Commando did this as well in a different way in 1985). What you get is Liam Neeson kicking a@@ for 90 minutes. Because nobody gets in the way of Neeson and his child. A blast from start to finish. This is a definite daughter and Dad bonding movie.
After Taken, you can take Dad next door to the Grand Central Market for an in-between dinner/drink.
Then we follow it up with one of the greatest of all action movies ever made:
The original 1987 Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. It’s incredible to think that director John McTiernan directed Predator and Die Hard back to back.
Predator follows special-ops team leader Alan “Dutch” Schaefer on a “rescue” mission into Central America that Dutch smells rat on from the beginning.
But before Dutch can extract his team from what is clearly a dark-ops mission interfering in a Latin American country, the whole team realizes they have a much bigger enemy to go up against:
An Alien that can cloak itself in invisible camouflage and has come to earth with the express intent to hunt: man!
Of course that Alien didn’t know it was going up against 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One of the most ridiculous yet awesome action movies ever made. If you want to send your Dad into Father’s Day Heaven, come join us for this action movie double.
You’ll create gratitude and memories for life! On 35mm.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
