Tonight, we celebrate our Surreal Summer series finale with Jean Cocteau’s French classic of fantasy, surreal imagery and fairy tale: the 1946 Beauty and the Beast.

Cocteau, famous as a poet and avant-garde surreal moviemaker, harnessed his formidable and wildly creative talents to tackle (sincerely) one of France’s most beloved fairy tales.

The result is a movie that is filled with inventive trick shots, special effects & stunning visual solutions to fantastic subject matter, yet still beating with the heart of emotion, subversion, and a poetic commitment to love & longing.

The makeup and special effects, mind-blowing at the time, still endure (much like movies like 1933’s King Kong) because they were already stylized to begin with. Rather than attempt photo-realism, Cocteau understood that a fairy tale needs a fairy tale style.

A wonderful lesson in how an avant-garde artist can make a popular work that still pulses with wild invention, integrity and daring, Beauty and the Beast is an all-timer.

And we’re showing it on 35mm!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
