7:30pm SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959, dir. Billy Wilder, United Artists, USA, 121mns, Digital)

10pm THE APARTMENT (1960, dir. Billy Wilder, United Artists, France, 125mns, Digital)

Our final double feature of our The Heart Wants series are two back to back mega hits of writer/director Billy Wilder.

It’s always fascinating when a director hits the “white hot” moment of their career when they produce back to back classics. One can think of Charlie Chaplin with The Kid and The Gold Rush through Federico Fellini with La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 through Steven Spielberg with Jaws and Close Encounters (and then Raiders and E.T.).

Billy Wilder made bangers with the regularity of the turning of the sun. Almost every year or two, the new Billy Wilder movie from the early 1940’s through the late 1960’s came out to both critical acclaim and commercial successs. But never as stunningly as his back to back triumphs here.

Some Like It Hot, which follows Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as jazz musicians who witness a mob massacre and go into hiding in drag with an all-female band fronted by Marilyn Monroe, caught everyone by surprise with its mix of Shakespearean mistaken identity and raucous frank sexuality. It has since also become beloved by a generation for its LGBTQ themes and tolerance of all kinds of love and relationships.

We follow Some Like it Hot with The Apartment made just one year later and doubling down on an examination of complicated sexual and emotional relationships as romantic comedy.

Office drone C.C. “Bud” Baxter (everyman extraordinaire Jack Lemmon) suddenly finds himself on the ladder of promotion when he makes his apartment available to middle managers for their sexual trysts and affairs. But when he discovers that his boss Sheldrake (a surprisingly intimidating Fred MacMurray) is having an affair with elevator operator Fran Kubelik (wonderfully vulnerable Shirley MacLaine), a woman C.C. himself has emotions for, everything gets even more complicated. Quick.

Winner of the 1960 award for Best Picture, The Apartment juggles comedy and tragedy, hilarity and pathos, with a jaw dropping skill only a pro like Billy Wilder (with three decades of experience and an instinct for risk-taking) could pull off.

Often considered one of the greatest of American comedies (or movies period), The Apartment will inspire any movielover or moviemaker with just how profound movies can be about experiences we often don’t know how to talk about.

Join us for these two Billy Wilder bangers to close out our February!

Best always,
