Tonight we show three documentaries by Martin Scorsese made during the very intense period of his life from 1974 through 1978 .

These movies, made during Scorsese's rise as a director from MEAN STREETS and TAXI DRIVER, a rough divorce, and a rough personal time with drugs & alcohol, would culminate with Scorsese's hospitalization and road to recover with RAGING BULL and beyond.

They are also (as with so many Scorsese movies) deeply personal, honest, searching, hilarious, stylish documentaries that address three key Scorsese obsessions: his family/Italian-American heritage (Italian American), men behaving badly and then seeking redemption (American Boy), and music (The Last Waltz).

Italian-American is a captivating short documentary where Scorsese lets his Mother and Father (Catherine and Charles, often seen in cameos in his movies) tell stories of their lives and the lower east side neighborhood.

American Boy again adopts the "story-telling" format to allow Scorsese's good friend Steven Prince (who many know as the manic gun salesman in Taxi Driver) to tell a series of crazy stories of his life dealing with heroin addiction, violence, and the fast line in the music world.

We'll screen these two as a single event, take a 20 minute intermission, then return with the second half of the night:

Scorsese's amazing music doc/concert film about The Band The Last Waltz. Still considered the gold standard (or should it be the platinum standard) when it comes to mixing concert footage and behind the scenes interviews, The Last Waltz details the last concert The Band ever gave before their amicable decision to break up.

The concert is a stunning who's who of 1960's and 1970's rock including performances by Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, among many many others who come onstage to jam with the Band.

At the same time, Scorsese cuts to interviews with the Band Members as they tell the story of their careers and their fatigue with "the Road".

Scorsese has been lifelong friends with Band frontperson Robbie Robertson (who often does the music supervision on Scorsese movies) and The Last Waltz also captures a moment in time for the two of them that was extremely impactful.

And incredible doc all the way around. And we've got in on 35mm!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
