One of the most idiosynchratic movies of the 1980's was Talking Heads' front person David Byrne's directorial debut: True Stories.
While on the Stop Making Sense tour, David Byrne had become obsessed with tabloid stories, cut them out, and eventually pasted them all over his wall at home. He invited several filmmakers over one night and said he wanted to make a movie based on the premise: "What if all these stories were true?".
Thus was birthed one of the strangest, most fascinating musician navigated movies of all time. Starring, among others, John Goodman and monologue master Spalding Gray, True Stories follows David Byrne as a cowboy hat wearing stranger who wanders through fictional Virgil, Texas during its celebration of Texas's 150th year as a state. Along the way he meets an assortment of strange characters in strange vignettes.
The movie is also filled with Talking Heads' bangers that Byrne and his banddmates wrote for the movie including the all-timer Wild Life which was a nod to the movie's original title (Wild Infancy).
Byrne has proven himself again and again one of America's great dead-pan poets of observation, satire, irony, but also a deep and profound sincerity.
True Stories is a buried gem waiting to be discovered.
Best always,
