SECRET MOVIE CLUB presents

Part of our I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, ITALIAN HORROR CLASSICS Series [Mario Bava Night] Friday, October 7, 2022

LOCATION: The Million Dollar Theater, 307 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90013

10pm KILL BABY KILL (1966, dir. Mario Bava, Italy, 75mns, 35mm)

Tonight, in the historic and atmospheric Million Dollar Theater movie palace (we think the Italian masters would approve), we kick off our tribute to three of the greatest Italian directors of horror ever.

First up, Mario Bava Night! Mario Bava, the earliest of our three masters, is one of cinema’s supreme stylists. He often acted as a ghost cinematographer on his projects (having been a cinematographer). His ability to take low budget giallo and horror movies and somehow turn them into modern pop art masterpieces of wild color and design is unparalleled.

So beloved is he that everyone from the Beastie Boys to Roman Coppola to even Tobe Hooper have cribbed elements of his cinema.

First up we show his stone cold Giallo classic 1964’s Blood and Black Lace (the original Italian title-6 donne per l'assassino-actually translates as “6 Women for the Killer”) which has influenced everyone from Martin Scorsese to Pedro Almodovar.

In true Giallo style, an unknown killer terrorizes an Italian modeling house. As models begin to die in strange and (dare we say) super fashionable and stylized ways, the survivors try to figure out who is killing before they become the next victim. Full of daring, almost unbelievable vivid color, Blood and Black Lace proved a movie could push itself to the saturated color limit and still work as story.

Often, Italian Giallos come down to twisted sordid tales of family secrets and gnarled emotions. Bava made what many consider his ultimate masterpiece with Kill Baby Kill, a gothic horror about a village that appears to be haunted by a dead girl’s vengeful spirit.

The Bava style always foregrounded atmosphere, color, and eeriness over narrative coherency. Bava is one of the only directors to actually prove that sometimes an amazing style is the essence of cinema itself.

Come join us for these two Italian horror masterpieces. On 35mm!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
