6:30pm 16mm Horror Trailer Show

7p mTHE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS (1959, dir. Irvin Berwick, 71mns)

8:30pm THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (1959, dir. Ray Kellogg, 75mns)

10pm ROBOT MONSTER (1953, dir. Phil Tucker, 66mns)

We’re excited to kick off a new semi-regular series where we devote nights to showing wildly entertaining movies that may just benefit from being seen on 16mm! And who better to celebrate with than Michael Aguirre of See It On 16mm fame who has already curated amazing programs for the Frida Cinema, among others.

Tonight, Michael brings three ridiculously crazy 1950’s monster movies on 16mm. And we fire up our Eastman 16mm to screen them and have a blast.

First up, Michael has curated a 30 minute program of mind-melting 16mm horror trailers to prime us.

Then he drops us into the vat of awesomeness with 1959’s The Monster of Piedras Blancas which is basically a Creature from the Black Lagoon riff with way less money and way more weirdness and sexual tension.

Then we go from furnace to fire with 1959’s (what was it about 1959) The Giant Gila Monster. Here we’re mercifully on land. . .or is it merciful when a giant lizard attacks hot-rodding teens and sends them careening into fiery crashes in ravines? Will the lizard have a face off with a hot rodder who packs his car with TNT? Of course!!!

Finally we wrap up with 1953’s Robert Monster about. . .yeah, you guessed it, a Robot Monster with the body of an ape and a space helmet who has destroyed all human life on Earth with a death ray! Where do you go from there? Well there are 8 survivors so Robot Monster decides it’s most effective to take them out one by one.

These are the kinds of movies that Mystery Science 3000, Riff Tracks, and nights at Secret Movie Club were made for.

And all of them are 75 minutes or fewer. So the joy (or pain) will be to the point.

Come join Michael Aguirre and us as we thread up the 16mm, fire up the projector, and revel in the horror monster movies that got made in the 1950’s.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
