We close out our Fassbinder 2021 series with three very different yet fascinating works.
First up is Fassbinder's 2nd ever feature made in 1969, Katzelmacher (a Bavarian slang term derogatory for a foreigner and translated as either "trouble maker" or more literally "cat-screwer").
Katzelmacher is a fascinating movie because it's clearly still fascinated with the Godardian, Brechtian devices of Fassbinder's anti-theater and early work (repeated shot movements, variations on scenes, etc.) but it pulsates with the stinging "shoot in all directions" humanist observation of his very best work.
The movie centers around a group of aimless friends who get agitated when a Greek foreign worker, Jorgos (played by Fassbinder himself), suddenly tries to befriend them and be part of their group.
If anyone thought Fassbinder was going to cut his generation a break all they have to do is watch Katzelmacher to know that Fassbinder, even this early in his career, was going to go after everyone and everything with the razor.
We see how young people who pride themselves on not being like their parents or the older generation, who define themselves as "open minded and accepting", can become just as reactionary, closed off, and xenophobic as the stuffy adults they supposedly are rebelling against.
A tremendous vital exciting work, Katzelmacher much more than Fassbinder's first movie Love is Colder Than Death (still a dynamite movie) offers us the blueprint for the rest of Fassbinder's career.
Best always,
Craig Hammill

We recommend that you park just outside our theater. Remember our theater is actually in a beautiful street art alleyway in the back of the 1917 Bay Street building.
