We kick off our Movie Holiday Party series with two totally singular, unique holiday classics. . .in very different genres.
First up is Satoshi Kon's TOKYO GODFATHERS. On a Sony 35mm print! Japanese anime master filmmaker Kon (whose PAPRIKA, MILLENIUM ACTRESS, and PERFECT BLUE rocked our worlds in 2019) switches gears to tell the heart-warming, humanist story of three Homeless people who discover an abandoned baby during the holidays and struggle to figure out how to handle the situation.
TOKYO GODFATHERS is a clever re-working of the John Ford movie THREE GODFATHERS (which Ford himself re-made from an earlier version that he also directed!) that transplants the story from the Western to modern day Tokyo. But the spiritual themes are all there in the unique, ultra creative, unexpected style of Satoshi Kon.
We programmed TOKYO GODFATHERS first because next we dive into the darkness with the hilarious, wild, classic horror movie from the 1970's Black Christmas.
Directed by Bob Clark (who would go on to direct another holiday classic A Christmas Story a decade later), Black Christmas follows a sorority during holiday break. There's a killer on the loose who kills the girlsone by one who didn't go home for the holidays.
At first no one knows what's going on but slowly, the final girls begin to realize that the killer might be. . .
Ah c'mon! You didn't think we were going to give it away. Still a revolutionary movie for how it basically takes an oft-told campfire story and translates it into a gripping, wildly entertaining unpredictable horror movie, Black Christmas may not fill you with holiday cheer. But it will fill you with holiday fear! And we're showing it on 16mm.
Come have a blast with two very quirky idiosynchratic holiday classics.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
