Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

Our Little Movie that Could series continues with two 21st century examples of how ingenuity, creative problem solving, and maybe even a little craziness can get high concept movies made on a micro-budget.

Bellflower is one of those little cinematic miracles that drops your jaw in the first ten minutes and keeps it there until the explosive final credits. It's got everything: tricked out cars with flame throwers and whiskey dispensers, crazy bloody special effects, stunning and disturbing and surprising sequences.

Yet at heart, it's actually a beautiful metaphor about the intensity with which we experience our first love, relationship, breakup, and aftermath.

Amateur inventor and misfit Woodrow meets kindred spirit Milly and they decide, on the spot, to drive to Texas from California to check out a bar. This kicks off their relationship which then goes through the archetypical ups and downs.

This movie always threatens to topple over or overheat with its near grand guignol and high opera take on relationships yet it never does. It somehow perfectly captures the feeling.

Next is Shane Carruth's mind-blowing time travel sci-fi movie Primer which won at Sundance because it is one of the best time travel movies you will ever see MADE for almost no money (the budget was reportedly $15,000.00).

It niftily takes the premise of two people inventing something in their garage, almost a riff on how Microsoft and Apple and Amazon etc all came about, but here we get two friends inventing a time machine.

However, the movie is also constructed as a kind of Borges-like puzzle where we have to figure out how the rules work, what iteration of timeline we're in, and who exactly is betraying who.

If you need inspiration immediately to get you to make your first feature, you gotta come see these two amazing movies.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
