Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

Today we kick off a 2 day series RE-EVALUATING MICHAEL BAY.

The line on Bay is usually "clearly ridiculously visually talented but horrible at telling stories and way too jingoistic".

I'll be damned if there isn't a shot with a setting sun through an American flag as red-blooded (presumably conservative) Americans walk in slow-mo in almost every Bay movie.

But over the years, an honest cinephile has to admit that Michael Bay has made some pretty damn fun movies. And even, on occassion, REALLY GOOD ONES.

So we're going to give Bay his due and re-evaluate him through the lens of 4 of his most re-watched or acclaimed movies. ALL ON 35mm!

First up is Bad Boys 2. Yes, Bad Boys 2.

This follow-up to the surprise hit finds our favorite Miami buddy cops Mike and Marcus having to investigate and take down an ecstasy smuggling ring.

Somehow the whole thing ends up with a ridiculous car chase in Cuba crashing into Guantanamo Bay(!?!).

Bad Boys 2 may have been the first time Bay slyly said directorially "F' it. I know what I do well and I'm gonna turn it up to 11!". This movie is filled with ridiculous shots, ridiculous performances, ridiculous stunts and. . .well. . .it's awesome.

Somehow here Bay turns his signature excess into an actual wink and nod to the audience.

He may even surpass this with his "indie" (by his standards) surprise Pain & Gain. Often cited as Michael Bay's Fargo or A Simple Plan, it follows three, none so bright, but ambitious shredded gym trainers (played with glee by Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie) who kidnap a wealthy man to get the cash.

To everyone's surprise, Michael Bay actually interrogated the assumptions of his earlier movies: is it always good to be so goal-driven, so materialistic, so unquestioningly "American" in terms of defining success as material success.

There's still Bay style and excess to burn but it may (at least as of this writing) be Bay's best and most complex yet enjoyable picture.

So let's re-evaluate Michael Bay. Behind all the Transformers movies stands an Art Center School of Design grad after all who knows how to blow sh*t up and turn the camera 270 degrees better than all his peers.

And. . .you know what. . .he is talented.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
