Tonight, you get a two-for-one.
First, and most important, this event is a fundraiser where all ticket revenues will be donated to assistance to Ukraine asap through the amazing Ukraine and Ukraine-American artist collective Spilka (@spilka.nyc).
Second, and as an added bonus, this is also a Take a Chance showing of what's often considered the crown jewel of Ukrainian cinema Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors on 35mm.
Made in 1965 by Sergei Parajanov who had labored for years as an up and coming director at the Kyiv studios, Shadows of our Forgotten Ancestors is a magical realist Romeo and Juliet like tale about a young Ukranian Hutsol romance torn apart by the tensions of a family blood feud, ghosts, and other forces.
A mind-blower when it came out in 1965, it won a constant stream of awards on the festival circuit. Alongside Andrei Tarkovsky (who would burst onto the scene at roughly the same time with Ivan's Childhood), Sergei Paranjarov showed the world that daring auteur voices were finding ways to make exciting movies within the Soviet system. Though he only made this and The Color of Pomegranates he is often considered one of the greatest directors of the Soviet era. Most impressively because of his daring stance of breaking with the Soviet realist style to create something wildly unique, daring, experimental, and adventurous.
Based on a famous Ukrainian novel, shot in the Ukrainian language at the Ukrainian Dovzhenko Studios, Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors is filled with wildly inventive camera work, production design, sequences, costumes, and cinema. Roger Ebert said the movie felt like early Scorsese with camera work so inventive and wild you "need seatbelts".
Parajarov would be imprisoned in the early 1970's for his perceived dangerous cinematic transgression and bisexuality. Tarkovsky wrote a famous letter imploring Soviet authorities to release him.
Tonight, come take a chance and jump on this rare opportunity to see Parajarov's work on 35mm in a movie theater.
At the same time, let's honor and aid all the daring, resilient brave spirits in Ukraine who have surprised the world with their insistence on their own autonomy.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
