We tie up loose ends on our mini-Hugh Grant series within our bigger LOVE! ROMANCE! EMOTION! series with two mirror images of the Hugh Grant Persona.
First up is the Richard Curtis penned romcom supernova Four Weddings & A Funeral that essentially launched a dozen plus English rom-com hits and Hugh Grant's career from actor to superstar. Of course the reason for this is that it's so damned enjoyable. Grant plays Charles who, with his group of friends, attends. . .you guessed it. . .Four Weddings and A Funeral throughout the movie. Along the way he meets American Carrie (Andie MacDowell) but writer Curtis cleverly subverts our expectations with where and how their relationship goes. Full of that amazing Curtis formula-hilarious laughs, real romance, and surprising emotion along with great Mike Newell direction and tremendous performances across the board from the ensemble, if you're looking for the feel-good movie you need for your Valentine's month date, here it is.
We follow this up with an undersung Hugh Grant rom-com masterpiece About a Boy. Here Grant begins to make the much needed transition from affable matinee idol to cad and self-involved narcissist. Grant was always an actor who enjoyed playing a variety of roles in a variety of movies before he got typecast as the "love interest lead". Movies like About a Boy, based on the Nick Hornby novel, allowed him to take his reputation as an actor back. Grant plays Will, a proudly self-involved single man in his 30's who wants absolutely no responsibility whatsoever. But when his plan to pretend to be a single father to sleep with single mothers backfires, Will finds himself bonding with Marcus, a young boy, with an emotionally erratic mother (the always amazing Toni Collette).
Like High Fidelity did for John Cusack, About a Boy allows Hugh Grant to be human and complicated. Also like High Fidelity, it's a wildly enjoyable and funny movie.
So come enjoy a twopack of Hugh Grant for Valentine's month! On 35mm.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
