However, WE ARE SCREENING THE 35MM PRINT and will do an inspection/test ahead of time if we feel it better to view 20 minutes of picture digitally.

Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

We head into our final act of Fassbinder movies with one of his absolute bangers The Merchant of Four Seasons. On 35mm!

We are devoting November and December to both making sure we view a few more fascinating Fassbinder deep dives (The Third Generation, Katzelmacher) while also showing his towering masterpieces Berlin Alexanderplatz, In A Year of 13 Moons, his stunning episode from Germany in Autumn, and his fascinating final movie Querelle.

The Merchant of Four Seasons if often considered one of Fassbinder's absolute best alongside The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, Ali Fear Eats the Soul, Fox and His Friends. It inaugurates Fassbinder's middle period where he moved away from the abrasive Brechtian remove of his early anti-theater phase (though still amazing) and embraced a warmer, Douglas Sirk inspired, melodramatic approach that still allowed him to dial up maximum rage and irony.

Here we follow Hans, a kind hearted fruit peddlar, in 1950's Munich who has the misfortune of actually fighting for the French Resistance/Allies against Hitler. When he returns home, he is ostracized by many Germans for what they view as his "treachery". He takes it all with quiet dignity, marries, has a daughter, sells his fruit.

But as time wears on, Hans' goodness stands in stark contrast to the pettiness and bitterness of all those around him who begin to resent him more and more.

Another stunning Fassbinder portrait of how hard it is to be truly upright in a world that hates you for it. Merchant is one of this programmer's personal favorites.

Best always,
