Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

John Cassavetes' career had a familiar pattern. He would go all out blood, sweat, and tears to make an independent movie he believed in, often mortgaging his house or taking sub-par acting jobs to hustle cash, and it would be a MASSIVE HIT (Shadows, Faces, A Woman Under the Influence). Then a studio would offer to back him and he would have a miserable time of it.

Still, two of his absolute best movies were made within the studio system just after the surprise success of his years in the making indie Faces.

We show both those movies (the second is Minnie and Moskowitz which we show November 18, 2021 @ 8p) this month.

First we kick off with Husbands, one of this programmer's personal favorite Cassavetes, a stunning, honest, unpredictable, wild work (aren't they all!).

Gus, Harry, and Archie, three middle aged friends, are shocked at the unexpected death of their fourth friend Stuart.

The death rocks their middle aged, married lives and they spend the next few days wandering around New York together before spontaneously deciding to go to London for a "Wild Boys" weekend.

Though the movie is filled with Cassavetes' trademark spontaneity and scenes of wild tone changes, it is also anchored by incredible filmmaking and editing which somehow gives the movie an intense, hilarious rigor.

Husbands shocked the studio and audiences in its refusal to hide the huge flaws of each of the men. The movie touches on alcoholism, adultery, violence, anger in a nakedly honest Cassavetes' way. It's likely that much of America wasn't ready to see a movie that so sincerely acted as a mirror to the mid-20th century Male persona.

As with all his great movies, Cassavetes NEVER judges any of his characters. But neither does he excuse their behavior OR glorify it. The singular genius of Cassavetes was always to celebrate life while being RIGOROUSLY honest about everything.

There was no one like Cassavetes before he arrived and there really hasn't been anyone like him since. A singular uncontrollable life force who dared to tackle everyday realities no one else could ever film or face up to.

By the way, this movie is also hilarious. So come watch one of Cassavetes' most divisive (but for this programmer, one of his greatest) yet personal movies.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
