KYMMS 365 DAY MOVIE CHALLNEGE: EXTRA ORDINARY (2019, dir by Mike Ahern, Enda Loughman) by Kymm Zuckert

This is another film chosen at random from my list, that I didn’t remember anything about. I would like to thank my past self, because Extra Ordinary is a winner.

Rose is a psychic who is trying not to be a psychic and just be a driving instructor, because she fears her talent is dangerous. Martin is a widower with the ghost of his wife still in the house, refusing to leave. Christian Winter, played by Will Forte (and I guess the reason this tiny Irish film was on my radar to start with) is a one-hit wonder musician, and that one hit was a really long time ago, so he needs to sacrifice a virgin to a demon in order to make his next record a hit, and he chances on Martin's daughter.

This movie is weird and quirky, but not in a twee way, and very funny and sweet. Maeve Higgins is just lovely as the lonely, fearful Rose, and she and Barry Ward as the equally lonely Martin, have solid chemistry. Will Forte is less realistic and somewhat over-the-top, but it makes sense for an American rock star who lives in an Irish village to be a bigger presence than the rest of the populace, see also: an American celebrity in a small, Irish supernatural comedy. I was doing some reading on this film, and saw some complaints that it wasn’t scary enough. So just in case anybody is going to start this movie hoping it will eventually turn scary. . . it’s not going to!

It is a comedy, and really all you have to do is watch the first three minutes and you get the vibe of the film which isn’t, “Will suddenly turn super freaking scary before it’s over!” I mean, ghosts literally wear sheets, pay attention! So, if you want scary, go somewhere else, if you want charming, this is for you. It is available on Showtime Anytime.
