7:45pm TRICK R TREAT (2007, dir. Michael Dougherty, WB, USA, 82mns, DCP)

9:15pm After-Party w/ DJ @ama.b.music

SPECIAL NOTE: This is Halloween. We encourage audience members to dress in costume and come ready to have a good time. We’ll have wine, beer, candy, popcorn. We’ll have a special award for the winner of the audience chosen BEST COSTUME! And we’ll leave the club open for at least an hour or two after the movie for music, dancing, hanging out, and a Halloween party!

Tonight, we celebrate Halloween with one of the most fun, mischievous, wicked hearted Halloween themed moves of the 21st century: 2007’s anthology Trick R Treat.

One of those movies that was nearly buried (no pun intended) and forgotten back in its original run (it had already been delayed 2 1/2 years when it got a very small release) Trick R Treat has since gone on to rightly be re-appraised as a wildly fun, creative, quintessential Halloween film.

And dare we say it. . .even better than Stephen King’s and George Romero’s Creepshow of which it could be compared given the two movies anthology/short story approach to a series of stories with R rated gore, shocks, and comedy.

Trick R Treat is actually more unified since all of its stories take place in the fictional town of Warren Valley, Ohio on the same Halloween night. But part of the fun is that we jump in a non-linear way between the stories so that slowly we come to see how certain events connect, lead to, or are a result of things we’ve previously seen.

And each time a character breaks a “Halloween” rule, we see “Sam”, a strange child trick or treating in pajamas and wearing a burlap bag over his head.

The stories include nasty fun riffs on a wicked punishment to a wife who hates Halloween and has no respect for its traditions to a School Principal who kills with cyanide laced candy to revenge dead children take on teens playing pranks based on tragedy to (possibly the most clever of the bunch) a pretty nifty inversion on the Little Red Riding hood story starring Anna Paquin.

Our host “Sam” gets his very own vignette with Succession’s Brian Cox as a cranky man holed up in his house with a past connected to a previous vignette. And then the filmmakers end with a conclusion as suitably nasty and fun as the entire movie.

Come discover a new Halloween classic. Dress in costume. And then stay as we open up the club to you for some good old fashioned Halloween partying!

Best always,
