7:30pm TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY (2011, dir. Tomas Alfredson, Universal, UK, 110mns, 35mm)
We kick off our February 2023 The Heart Wants series with the amazing spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (on 35mm to showcase cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema’s amazing camerawork). Guest programmed by birthday boy and Secret Movie Club team member Daniel Ott, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy announced to the world that Gary Oldman was fully back, with a vengeance, ready to prove he is one of the greatest actors of the past few generations.
Adapted from the John Le Carre spy novel of the same name, Tinker Tailor follows veteran agent George Smiley (Oldman), burned by an adulterous wife and cagey around all his fellow MI6 spies, as he tries to discover the rat within the organization giving up agents to the Russians.
A movie with a hit-you-upside-the-head-with-a-two-by-four cast that includes Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Cirian Hinds, Toby Jones, Tinker Tailor also benefits from the atmospheric master directing of Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, hot off his vampire hit Let the Right One In.
You might be wondering why we’ve included it in our The Heart Wants series. But you will know once you see the movie. A spider’s web of stratagems and intrigues that ultimately reveals itself also to be about a forbidden love, this movie is utterly cinematic. And Oldman owns it with the same intensity he’s owned the screen with anytime he performs.
Here he pulls off the nifty trick of making a very internal, opaque man (out of necessity) utterly riveting. On 35mm!

*Please note that though we strive to always show titles on 35mm film if advertised, we may have to screen digitally if the print we receive is in such bad shape or if we don't receive the print in time because of a shipping delay. We will do our best to alert the audience. When this does occur, we will offer each ticket holder who chooses not to attend a complimentary ticket to a future event in exchange. REFUNDS:
We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.
However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write to us before showtime: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening, good for 90 days. (Disclaimer: Future screening must have available tickets, cannot be a fundraiser, and must be comparably priced)
HELPFUL SECRET MOVIE CLUB (1917 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, LA, CA 90021) THEATER PARKING TIPS:
We recommend that you park just outside our theater. Remember our theater is actually in a beautiful street art alleyway in the back of the 1917 Bay Street building. You get to our entrance by taking a right on Wilson, then a right behind the building. We are the first set of black steps on the right after the big gate.
There is also a parking lot at the corner of Mateo and Violet Street, just 2 blocks from our theater, which costs $7 per car.
