We wrap up June 2022 with a screening of one of Francis Ford Coppola’s earliest gems: his 1969 road trip movie The Rain People starring Shirley Knight, James Caan, and Robert Duvall.

Rain People, in many ways, is the undersung Coppola movie that set the template for his career all the way up to the present moment where he’s putting $100 million of his own money into shooting his long gestating epic Megaopolis with Adam Driver.

Made through his own company, American Zoetrope, and crewed by the likes of George Lucas (!!), The Rain People follows pregnant, unsettled Natalie who leaves her husband to take a road trip. Along the way she meets unstable ex-college football star Killer and the two soon have a series of encounters on the road that will profoundly change their lives forever.

This was one of the movies that actually inspired Alfonso Cuaron’s Y Tu Mama Tambien. It also is filled with the minor key idiosyncratic Coppola genius that powers The Conversation, Rumble Fish, One from the Heart, and Tetro, among others.

Unlike many who talk a big game about returning to the indie world, Coppola is one of the few who actually did just that. In 2007 at the age of 68 and after a 10-year absence from moviemaking, Coppola suddenly reappeared with his self-financed Youth without Youth starring Tim Roth. Since then, he’s been on a crash course with destiny to fulfill his ultimate goal of making an epic movie on an epic canvas completely his way.

See where it all started with his intense, beautifully unique, character-driven movie The Rain People. The movie that really started it all.

Best always,
