7:30pm TEEN WOLF (1985, dir. Rod Daniel, Park Circus, USA, 92mns, 35mm)

Followed by a live music set by rock band MOVIE CLUB and party in our huge back room area!

More about rock band Movie Club: Born of the bloodline connection between guitar and drums, Movie Club is an instrumental psych rock band out of Venice Beach. The duo melts the focused rock drumming of Jessamyn Violet with the searing riffs of guitarist Vince Cuneo to create their own uniquely full sound. They have released five albums since forming in 2018. As lovers of film, they focus on creating cinematic visual content as well, crafting award-winning music videos. Their last video for their single “Trap Door” won “Best Music Video” at the 2022 Istanbul Film Awards. They have been featured in Paste, Rolling Stone India, LA Weekly, and Glide. We’re honored to partner tonight with our sibling rock brother from another mother Movie Club for a night of retro 80’s cinema with a 35mm print of Teen Wolf (hand picked by Movie Club) and then live rock and roll hard core in our back room.

We’ve said it many times before but let’s say it here again: artistic partnerships, alliances, community are what Secret Movie Club is all about.

To make a movie, you need to know how to work on a team and how to motivate a team and how to get the best out of each department which in term is giving you their all in their specialized field.

So when local rock and roll band Movie Club (now on tour, bio above) came to us with the idea of a movie and music night, we said “YES!!!!!”. Then Covid hit and we said “WAIT!!!!!” Now Covid is in the rearview mirror and we said “LET’S DO THIS F@#!iNG THING!”

Tonight, we screen a 35mm print of the beloved mid 80’s retro high school monster movie comedy Teen Wolf starring a very young Michael J Fox straddling his tv show Family Ties and his surprise hit blockbuster Back to the Future.

For some reason, the United States loves movies about teenagers whose hormones and rebelliousness are so intense that they literally turn into werewolves or vampires or whatever. This goes back to the 1950’s I Was A Teenage Werewolf (of which Teen Wolf is a riff) and before.

Michael J Fox plays Scott Howard, an actually really endearing and likable 17 year old, who discovers he’s got lycanthropy running in the family. But his newfound wolfish tendencies help him everywhere from the basketball court to the boudoir. . .

A movie that really only could exist smack dab in the middle of Regan’s 1980’s in which a pretty nice square kid’s were wolfishness just means he’s even nicer and kinder, Teen Wolf is a fun ride and an amazing conversation piece and we’re showing it on 35mm.

Then we fling open the curtains to our big back room and Movie Club plugs in the amps, the electric guitars, the drum set, and f’n ROCKS THE HOUSE!

Rock and roll, hanging out, food, drink, movie community, music, this is what cinema is all about.

Best always,

Craig Hammill

*Please note that though we strive to always show titles on 35mm film if advertised, we may have to screen digitally if the print we receive is in such bad shape or if we don't receive the print in time because of a shipping delay. We will do our best to alert the audience. When this does occur, we will offer each ticket holder who chooses not to attend a complimentary ticket to a future event in exchange. (Disclaimer: Good for 90 days – Future screening must have available tickets, cannot be a fundraiser, and must be comparably priced)
