7:30pm Spike Jonze Cornucopia: Music Videos, Commercials, Documentaries (1991-2020, dir. Spike Jonze, USA, 165mns w/ 15 min intermission, Digital)
We’ll be celebrating and kicking off our The Jonze Jones series with a look at director Spike Jonze’s commercials, music videos, skate videos, and documentaries from his start in 1991 through his most recent Beastie Boys Story documentary in 2020.
The first part of the night (7:30pm-8:15p) will be a curated selection both well known and rare of Jonze’s work outside of feature films. The Spike Jonze aesthetic, while oft imitated, has never really been matched or surpassed by anyone. . .who is not Spike Jonze.
Jonze’s video and commercial work is famous for its often lo-fi yet pop culturally attuned wild inventiveness. Many still remember his fun riff on 70’s cop shows "Sabotage" music video for the Beastie Boys.
But one of Jonze’s most creative pranks was when he created dance choreographer alter ego Richard Koufey and the Torrance Community Dance group who then did a very silly dance routine outside a movie theater for Fatboy Slim’s "Praise You". When the video won at the MTV Music Video awards, Jonze accepted the award in character.
This kind of 1990’s goofball, surreal, creative aesthetic inspired a whole generation of teenagers and college kids with a sheer glee to do random (but always inventive things). The ethos has almost been lost now (save for Jonze’s own work with everyone on Jackass Forever in 2022).
After our fifteen minute intermission, we’ll devote the second half of the night to Jonze’s most recent work Beastie Boys Story documentary he did with surviving members Ad Roc and Michael Diamond in 2020. Which itself is a look back at the 1980’s and 1990’s era that shaped all of them.
What better primer for Spike Jonze then to see all the work he did in music videos, commercials, TV pranks, to get himself ready for his subversive yet sweet feature films?
Best always,
Craig Hammill
