Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

If you love cinema, sometimes you just gotta go hard core.

Today we look at the two incredible epic movies master directors Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch made early in their careers that, ironically, would convince each of them to make sure they had final cut and complete control on all pictures afterwards.

It's an interesting thing that difficult, heart attack inducing movie amazing directors make that allow them their careers. Coppola suffered on THE GODFATHER. Spielberg suffered on JAWS. Kubrick suffered on SPARTACUS. Lynch suffered on DUNE. Yet somehow these experiences produced incredible movies and forged these young directors like sword steel in fire for later, even greater works.

First up, we screen the 1960 epic SPARTACUS, produced and starring the incredible Kirk Douglas, as the slave Spartacus who would lead a rebellion against the oppressors of Rome. Douglas fired initial director Anthony Mann early in the shooting and brought on Kubruck, whom he admired greatly from their work together on PATHS OF GLORY.

Though Kubrick later felt handcuffed by a script he couldn't change and essentially considered this a work-for-hire, he somehow was able to elevate the movie thousands of miles above the average Roman epic that had been popular in Hollywood for ten years.

Populated by an all-time great cast that includes Lawrence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Woody Strode, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton, Tony Curtis, among others, Spartacus is also filled with muscular ironic set-pieces exquisitely crafted by Kubrick leading up to .one of the most rousing slave revolt and aftermath sequences ever put to film.

This is also the movie that broke the blacklist as Douglas insisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo receive credit for his work.

We follow this up with one of the most fascinating epics of the 1980's: David Lynch's sci-fi Dune. Lynch has always been candid that he too (like Kubrick) felt his hands were tied as he wasn't granted final cut on the picture and was dealing with a very strong-willed producer (here famous Italian producer Dino De Laurentis).

Yet Lynch still somehow managed to imbue Dune with his incredible power to create dreamlike images, sequences, moods, worlds. We also get a young Kyle Machlachlan as Paul Atreides in the first of many roles for Lynch as well as Lynch regular Jack Nance among others.

Dune tells the story of a far off future where battling royal families plot and scheme against each other to control the desert planet of Arrakis which contains "the spice", a drug which allows the user the ability to see into the future, read thoughts, AND power space travel.

Young noble Paul Atreides (Machlachlan) finds himself torn in the middle between family loyalties and a growing sense that the rebels on the planet may be more entitled to their freedom then he has been lead to believe.

Filled with incredible practical effects including crazy sequences involving the massive tidal wave sized "Worms" that burrow beneath Arrakis, battles/duels between the graceful Atreides clan and the warhog like bleeding, pussing crude Harkonians, Dune is every inch a Lynch experience.

So come join us for two singular crazy epics that show auteurs in their youth. On 35mm!

Best always,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS

REFUNDS:

We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.

However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening.

WHY ARE THE TICKET PRICES HIGHER THAN NORMAL?

In order for us to re-open, maintain health protocols (which includes operating at only 50% capacity), and screen movies on 35MM, we need to temporarily raise our ticket prices. We apologize.

However, if you could look at this as partially helping Secret Movie Club re-open indoor theaters and 35MM film screening, we would be eternally grateful.

As we can increase capacity, we will IMMEDIATELY LOWER ticket prices.

If you could look at this as all of us being in this together, we WILL remember your kindness.

HELPFUL MILLION DOLLAR THEATER MOVIE PALACE PARKING TIPS:

If you are attending all movies on any given day (the double or triple feature), you can go to ADD ONS and pre-order an all day $6 Grand Central Parking Lot Pass. Folks just attending one feature can also park at this lot and as long as you grab food/drink from GCM you can get a 90 minute validation stamp that will help the cost of parking.

HOW WILL OUR STAFF MAKE SURE THE THEATER IS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE:

We will have staff in the theater (on both the ground and balcony levels) at all times who make sure everyone is wearing masks and obeying protocols. We will have signage at entrance, markings at concessions, restrooms, etc so folks keep 6 ft distance at all times.

Anyone not observing safe protocols will kindly be asked to leave. On top of this, we’ll be making announcements at the head of each screening to make sure everyone understands the rules & regs!
