7:30pm SEXY BEAST (2000, dir. Jonathan Glazer, Fox Searchlight, UK, 88mns, Digital)
9:30pm POSSESSOR (2020, dir. Brandon Cronenberg, NEON, Canada, 104mns, DCP)
Tonight’s Heists, Capers, and Cons take us into some hearts of darkness in the ribcage of the criminal animal.
First up is Jonathan Glazer’s wild, shocking, funny, violent Sexy Beast which introduced the whole world to the feral acting brilliance of Ray Winstone and the seldom seen rude, scatalogical side of Ben Kingsley.
Winstone plays retired British thief Gal now living and getting sun burned and routinely drunk by the side of his pool in Spain. But when violent Don, played with irrepressible force by Kingsley, shows up to demand that Gal return to England for a job, everything goes topsy turvy. Because Don will not take no for an answer.
To say more would be to ruin the twists and turns the follow including a stunning third act heist that also introduces us to the seeming bottomless depths of menace that is actor Ian McShane (Deadwood) here playing the mob boss at the heart of it all.
We follow Sexy Beast up with an even darker more disturbing look at a kind of heist, Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor. We don’t know if the old man (yes, Brandon is the son of David) is acting as consigliere for his son’s string of supple and sinister cinema. But the apple sure don’t fall far from the tree.
Here we meet Tasya (the always interesting Andrea Riseborough) an assassin who “possesses” a host body by means of a new technology and uses that body to kill important people without anyone ever suspecting the real culprits. She is supervised by a dead inside Jennifer Jason Leigh who grows concerned that Tasya still visits her estranged husband and child when not working. Family and murder just do not mix.
When Tasya’s newest host body starts to reject her everything gets real visceral, real gross, and real disturbing, real quick.
A fascinating hard core movie that manages to dig deeper into the unsettling body horror genre pioneered by Papa. Come join us for two amazing 21st century heist movies that still show the genre can surprise.
Best always,
