Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!
Today, we continue our A24 fest (mixed with a great Magnolia title) AND do a Sean Baker double with Tangerine and The Florida Project (on 35mm!).
Sean Baker is one of the most exciting voices on the cinema scene today. His most recent Red Rocket just took the Cannes Film Festival by storm, making Baker three for three since Tangerine blew the doors off folks' cinematic minds in 2015.
And so, we rightfully start with Tangerine whose biggest miracle is quickly rising above its shorthand as "that indie movie shot entirely on an iphone". Yes, it was shot entirely on an iphone and that, in and of itself, serves notice to all moviemakers to get over themselves and make something if they believe they have something to say.
But very quickly, you forget this fact and just get lost in the great storytelling, performances, and heart of this movie. Tangerine tells the story of two best friends and sex workers on Christmas Eve when one of them gets out of prison and learns that her boyfriend/pimp may be seeing someone else. They then go on an odyssey on Santa Monica Boulevard to find out what's happening.
A fast paced, hilarious, at times stunning, at times heart breaking, at times heart warming story, Baker's two leads (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor) are the definition of charismatic screen presences. But the movie is deeper than its startling premise might lead you to believe, showing the complexity of both the lives of sex workers and their "Johns". Maybe its biggest miracle is that it becomes every inch a "Christmas movie".
We follow this up with Baker's next feature, the 2017 35mm The Florida Project. Again choosing to focus on the emotional lives of marginalized and pre-judged peoples, we get the story of a wild Single Mother and her young daughter (again two powerhouse performances by Bria Vinaete & Brooklyn Prince) who live, like many, day to day in one of the motels that surround Florida's Disneyworld.
The motel's day manager (played in an all time best performance by Willem Dafoe) tries to simultaneously help and stay at a distance from the many children who live there because of his painful understanding that many of them may have to leave, will get taken away, evicted, at any moment.
The Florida Project surprises because it somehow manages to go even deeper into the comedy, pain, compromises, and struggles that folks we all pre-judge have to go through day to day just to survive.
These are two beautiful movies. Come enjoy them with us!
Best always,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS
REFUNDS:
We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.
However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening.
WHY ARE THE TICKET PRICES HIGHER THAN NORMAL?
In order for us to re-open, maintain health protocols and screen movies on 35MM, we need to temporarily raise our ticket prices. We apologize.
However, if you could look at this as partially helping the Secret Movie Club Theater re-open, make the improvements as we go to turn this into the amazing movie watching, movie making center we know it can be, we would be eternally grateful.
As we can increase capacity, we will IMMEDIATELY LOWER ticket prices.
If you could look at this as all of us being in this together, we WILL remember your kindness.
HELPFUL SECRET MOVIE CLUB (1917 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, LA, CA 90021) THEATER PARKING TIPS:
We recommend that you park just outside our theater. Remember our theater is actually in a beautiful street art alleyway in the back of the 1917 Bay Street building. You get to our entrance by taking a right on Wilson, then a right behind the building. We are the first set of black steps on the right after the big gate.
We will have a staff member on duty to monitor all cars parked in the street-art alleyway at our entrance.
There is also a parking lot at the corner of Mateo and Violet Street, just 2 blocks from our theater, which costs $7 per car.
HOW WILL OUR STAFF MAKE SURE THE THEATER IS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE:
We will have staff in the theater at all times who make sure everyone is wearing masks and obeying protocols. We will have signage at entrance, markings at concessions, restrooms, etc so folks keep 6 ft distance at all times.
Anyone not observing safe protocols will kindly be asked to leave. On top of this, we’ll be making announcements at the head of each screening to make sure everyone understands the rules & regs!
