7:30pm SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010, dir. Edgar Wright, Universal, USA, 112mns, 35mm)

As part of our ongoing When You Say Summer, I Say Cinema series, we’re screening movies that say summer to us in one way or another.

Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, possibly his masterpiece so far (and this programmer’s favorite of his work) says summer in celluloid. And we’re showing it on 35mm.

If you’ve never seen Scott Pilgrim or its cult reputation precedes it, leave all that at the door and just come with an open mind. What will blow you away is how filmmaker Wright finally found the perfect story to marry his hyper-charged sincere cinematic style to content that is infinitely better because of it.

Based on a graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim tells the story of how wanna be rocker 22 year old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) falls for Amazon delivery punk rock Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Windstead) only to discover he must defeat all her ex-boyfriends in increasingly hilarious video game boss style battles if their relationship is going to stand a chance.

Scott Pilgrim despite its committed video game and pop aesthetic is surprisingly astute in its dissection of the flaws of the modern twenty-something single male. While we empathize with Scott, he’s also no hero. And the women in the movie (including a hilarious early role by Aubrey Plaza) point out that in many ways Scott is as toxic as the ex-boyfriends he’s fighting.

The movie also channels that time in life when one is out of school with lots of free time on their hands but not yet fully on whatever road it is they need to travel across their adult life.

That period in life feels like a kind of extended-summer and we wanted to examine it here. Come see one of the great entertainments of the last 15 years. On 35mm!

Best always,

Craig Hammill

*Please note that though we strive to always show titles on 35mm film if advertised, we may have to screen digitally if the print we receive is in such bad shape or if we don't receive the print in time because of a shipping delay. We will do our best to alert the audience. When this does occur, we will offer each ticket holder who chooses not to attend a complimentary ticket to a future event in exchange. (Disclaimer: Good for 90 days – Future screening must have available tickets, cannot be a fundraiser, and must be comparably priced)
