7:45pm SABOTAGE (1936, dir. Alfred Hitchcock, Park Circus, UK, 76mns, 35mm)

9:30pm YOUNG AND INNOCENT (1937, dir. Alfred Hitchcock, Park Circus, UK, 84mns, 35mm)

Tonight, we deep dive two of Hitchcock’s best but lesser known of his British period.

Sabotage, based on a Joseph Conrad novel, is an uncharacteristically somber and suspenseful tale of Mrs. Verloc (Sylvia Sidney) who comes to realize her movie theater owning husband Oscar (Oskar Homolka) may be an anarchist and domestic terrorist planting bombs around London.

Hitch learned a key lesson here (which we won’t ruin until you see the movie) about the responsibility of the filmmaker when it comes to audience expectation and character. Interestingly, Hitch would break the rule gained from his hard earned wisdom later in one of his all-time classics. . .but more on that later.

Sabotage showcased Hitchcock’s ability to balance movie entertainment with a grasp of the complexities of real-life messy themes. Unlike many master popcorn moviemakers who are a bit more skilled at spectacle than psychology, Hitchcock established very early on, he had a talent for both.

We follow Sabotage with Young and Innocent, another gem in Hitch’s innocent man accused subgenera. Here young Robert Tisdall is accused of the murder of a successful actress after he discovers her corpse and is seen fleeing the scene. When he escapes police custody by hiding on the running board of young Erica Morris’s car, the two go on an odyssey getting to know each other and trying to find the real murderer.

Young and Innocent is a fun film filled with all the stylish suspense, great shots, and reveals you’d expect of a great Hitchcock movie. It also includes one of his best shots of the 1930’s which reveals. . .well we don’t want to spoil it for you.

Come catch a pair of Hitchcock British period deep dive bangers. On 35mm!

Best always,
