First Prince owned the 80's. Now he owns eternity.
Tonight, we work to replicate a Prince based concert model where he would play a stadium show then find a club and continue playing into the early morning.
We're showing two Prince classics back to back.
First is the all-time forever masterpiece Purple Rain on 35mm. One of the very rare musician-driven narrative movies that actually delivers what it promises, Purple Rain is the very thinly-veiled semi-autobiographical story of "The Kid" (played by Prince) and his band The Revolution (the actual Revolution band) as they compete with Morris Day and the Time at Minneapolis's famed First Avenue nightclub.
When "The Kid" meets new to town singer Apollonia, he falls in love, but he also struggles with the dysfunction of his home life where his black father and white mother argue nightly in a rocky marriage.
All the while, "The Kid" struggles to breakthrough to the audience as his personal resentments often cloud his ability to connect to the people to whom he's singing.
Purple Rain is just one banger song and scene after another leading to the climactic showdown between the two bands. The irony being that Prince wrote the music FOR EVERYONE so basically you're just hearing Prince compete against Prince.
Even more jaw dropping is that the movie is structured around a demo tape that Revolution band members Wendy and Lisa give The Kid to develop.
Often in movies like these, the climactic "hit" song is actually not that great. Here it's Purple Rain one of the greatest tracks (in this programmer's opinion) of all time.
We follow up Purple Rain with Prince's incredible 1987 concert film Sign O The Times (this programmer's personal favorite Prince album) which uses both live and staged footage to give a 90 minute sense of Prince's concerts in the late 80's.
Prince seemed to live to write and perform music. He lived, breathed, created music as a form of idiosynchratic prayer. And his concerts took you to an even deeper and higher level because you'd realize on top of all that, Prince was a mother-f@#$ing top level guitarist, dancer, show-stager.
So come tonight to wash yourself clean in the waters of Lake Minnetonka and be born again in the musical discovery of the Purple One at the very height and pinnacle of his powers.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
