Tonight, we do a Paul Newman two-fer featuring two of his greatest American misfit roles of the 1960's.

Paul Newman is an American treasure. Besides being damn fine looking, he was also a committed actor who actively sought anti-heroic misfit roles that deepened and revealed hidden layers of the American character.

FIRST. . .

Every now and then we just gotta show a movie we feel everyone should discover. This time, it's Paul Newman in the 1963 anti-hero western HUD. Based on a Larry McMurty work (and it does have incredible shades of The Last Picture Show in its way), HUD tells the story of a tormented but equally cocky, self-centered son of a rancher, Hud, who boozes, womanizes, bulldozes over people to keep himself from dealing with his brother's death.

Paul Newman plays Hud in one of his most stunningly brutal, laser like performances. A full decade before the 1970's, Newman plays one of the most charismatic fascinating S.O.B.s you're ever going to see put to celluloid.

On top of this, you get James Wong Howe's incredible black and white cinematography, incredible supporting performances especially from Patricia O Neal as Alma, a helper on the ranch, who catches Hud's eye but is equally attracted and repulsed by him.

HUD is one of those hidden gems that is every inch the equal of anti-hero movies like East of Eden and Five Easy Pieces . Newman gives a masterclass in how to make a character compelling without shaving the rough edges at all.

An incredible cinematic piece of work. And we're showing it on 35mm!

SECOND. . .COOL HAND LUKE really needs no introduction. One of a handful of 1960's misfit non-conformist movies that almost everyone for a generation could quote ("What we have here is a failure to communicate. . ." )even if they didn't know where the line came from.

Anti-authoritarian misfit WWII war vet Lucas "Luke" Jackson gets arrested for drunkenly cutting off the heads of parking meters and sentenced to two years on a brutal Florida chain gang.

Luke just won't play by anybody's rules. Not the brutal authoritarian Captain's nor Dragline, one of the grizzly leaders of the prisoners. Though this refusal to play ball with friend or foe makes life hard for Luke as he basically angers everyone, it also makes him a hero among other prisoners for living life his way.

Nevertheless, his "I'm living life my way" behavior puts him on a collision course for a showdown with some pretty brutal men.

These are two of the great 1960's movies. And we're showing them both on 35mm!

Best always,
