Our partnership with Electric Dusk Drive In (a wonderful home grown Los Angeles pop-up street cinema organization: https://www.electricduskdrivein.com/) continues with this third weekend of offerings!
We are excited to finally be able to kick off our FAMILY SUNDAYS series where we will screen a family classic for everyone.
And what better way to start then with the movie that launched an entire new studio, genre, string of classic, Pixar’s and Disney’s TOY STORY 1.
Although now, 25 years later, everyone looks back at TOY STORY 1 as a kind of inevitable classic, it’s important to remember that computer animated movies were very much in their infancy. Disney was still producing hand drawn classics like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LION KING around the same time. And a movie like TOY STORY was introducing a whole new look, approach to animation.
Pixar though clearly understood, from their very first movie, that a movie is won or lost in the story. And here we get one of the most beloved scripts and series of all Pixar’s many classic offerings.
Here, we see childhood from the point of view of young boy Andy Davis’s toys. Headed by Sheriff Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), they all feel nervous at both an approaching move to a new house and the arrival of a new toy for Andy’s birthday. This toy turns out to be action figure astronaut superhero Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) who is designed to take charge and lead.
This causes significant anxiety, paranoia, and mixed emotions in Woody as he realizes he may be replaced by Buzz as Andy’s favorite toy.
But soon the friction leads to the realization that the Toys must all work together when mishaps cause separation during the move.
TOY STORY would go on to produce three sequels (the most recent just released last year) in which Andy, the Toys, and the Audience would all grow up together and deal with even more intense and ambitious themes.
Here, at the start, we get a beautiful portrait of that moment in childhood when your imagination and connection with your toys are a key part of your understanding of the world and enjoyment of life.
Best always,
