Our partnership with Electric Dusk Drive In (a wonderful home grown Los Angeles pop-up street cinema organization: https://www.electricduskdrivein.com/) continues as wrap up summer with what we hope are two great weekends of movies!
We screen two of the most classic, amazing apocalypse car chase movies of all time: MAD MAX FURY ROAD and THE ROAD WARRIOR (MAD MAX 2), both directed by genius action director George Miller.
What is it about the apocalypse and cars that go together like peanut butter and chocolate? Whatever it is, director George Miller knew it. First we kick off with the most recent Mad Max movie, 2015’s FURY ROAD starring Charlize Theron as Furiosa, a wronged yet resilient truck driver, and Tom Hardy as Mad Max, the renegade loner who somehow always finds himself helping those in need.
FURY ROAD has one of the most intensely simple yet laser like plots of all time. Furiousa tries to smuggle enslaved women out of an apocalyptic kingdom to shelter only to be hunted down by the Ruler and his armies. Mad Max finds himself along for the ride and eventually works with Furiosa to settle scores once and for all.
The movie is filled with REAL car chases and REAL stunts that won’t just drop your jaw but smash it off and send it flying across the floor. Stunt men leap from car to truck on thirty foot poles, motorcycles leap over oil tankers and drop grenades, actors leap over, under, get strapped to cars belching fire.
MAD MAX FURY ROAD is THE ACTION MOVIE of the last 10 years.
Second up is the movie that inspired FURY ROAD, MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR. Made in 1982, THE ROAD WARRIOR was the second movie of the series and is considered co-equal (or even better) than FURY ROAD. Here we find Max just after the very first movie. He’s now a loner (after the death of his family) in a souped up muscle car, driving at 180 miles per hour for survival. With his dog.
When he happens by accident upon an oil refinery of survivors besieged by an apocalyptic motorcycle gang of S&M leather clad terrorists, lead by a hockey mask wearing leader called “The Humungous”, hungry for the survivor’s gas, Max at first doesn’t want any part of it.
But slowly, in the tradition of all great westerns, the innate goodness at the heart of Max’s character gets the better of him, and he decides to hatch the craziest yet potentially most effective of escape plans.
THE ROAD WARRIOR along with FURY ROAD has what is potentially one of the greatest extended all-out car chase sequences in all history. The stunts in this movie are even more gonzo than FURY ROAD when you consider George Miller had very little budget and was shooting in the outback in Australia. One stunt, which I won’t giveaway here, still boggles my mind as to how it was exactly done.
THE ROAD WARRIOR would go on to influence an entire generation of moviemakers including, most surprisingly, the Coen Brothers who would pay homage to it in their second feature RAISING ARIZONA.
So come join us for two blow your mind out of every orifice of your body car action movies in downtown Los Angeles!
Best always,

We will also be doing LIVE IN PERSON INTRODUCTIONS as we did for our theatrical screenings.
