7:30pm ONCE (2007, dir. John Carney, Fox, Ireland, 85mns, Digital)

9:20pm THE COMMITMENTS (1991, dir. Alan Parker, Swank, Ireland, 120mns, Digital)

SPECIAL NOTE: Guinness beer, Irish food and drink will be available tonight to help us celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Before, during, and after the screenings. So come celebrate with us and get your Irish on.

This year, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we two of the most fun Irish-Ireland themed musicals to come out in the past thirty years.

Once, the micro budget 2007 musical, tells the story of hard luck musicians Guy (Glen Hansard) and Girl (Marketa Irglova) who meet, fall in love, write music together.

The movie, shot on the streets of Dublin, with original songs by Hansard and Irglova (performing as The Swell Season) surprised the world with its mix of feel good storytelling and genuinely amazing music.

The very definition of a feel good movie that proved all the skeptics wrong, Once is pure joy.

We follow that up with Alan Parker’s The Commitments. Based on the Roddy Doyle novel of the same name (and which would become the first in a four movie series), The Commitments is about a group of American soul music loving Dubliners who get together to form the scrappiest cover band Ireland has ever seen. Parker, who had previously made the musicals Bugsy Malone and The Wall, has a blast here. And the actors, mostly Irish singers and musicians, have a rough edged sincerity to them that gives the whole movie tremendous charm.

So join us for a night of music, Irishness, beer, celebration. Because the United States claims 70 million people of Irish descent (from an island of 6 million). Which must mean we Irish procreate prodigiously.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
