7:30pm NOTORIOUS (1946, dir. Alfred Hitchcock, Swank, USA, 101mns, 35mm)
9:30pm CHARADE (1963, dir. Stanley Donen, Universal, USA, 115mns, 35mm)
This Valentine’s Day, if you’re looking for two suspense filled romantic classics, come join us at the Secret Movie Club Theater for Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious followed by Stanley Donen’s Charade.
Often when you talk to folks about their favorite Hitchcock, you hear a lot of Vertigo and Rear Window debates (with the occasional Psycho or Shadow of a Doubt aficionado). But there is a strong sub-group that call Notorious the best Hitchcock that Hitchcock ever made.
It tells the very fresh (for the time) story of Nazi War-Criminal hunting in South America. Alicia (a radiant Ingrid Bergman), the ashamed daughter of a war criminal, falls in love with U.S. government agent T.R. Devlin (Cary Grant) who convinces her to go undercover and seduce Alex (an always expectations exceeded performance by Claude Rains) to infiltrate the inner circle of shadowy Germans.
Notorious has an intensity and complexity that still shocks and surprises. No one is completely good or bad in the movie and it’s often hard to find the line between people doing their jobs, using each other, and becoming emotionally involved.
It also includes one of Hitch’s most famous shots. . .but. . .well. . .you’ll have to come and see it.
We follow this up with the movie often considered the greatest Hitchcock movie Hitchcock didn’t make. Stanley Donen’s Charade . A hilarious romantic thriller about newly widowed Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) who discovers that her husband was involved in some very shady dealings and may have ripped off his fellow thieves and hidden the money with Reggie. The only problem is. . .she has no idea where it could be. Enter charming if not completely trust-worthy Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) who wants to help her. . .or does he.
Charade feels like a dream of a Hitchcock movie complete with amazing European locations (though most of the movie takes place in Paris), a believable and charming central love story, and a great supporting turn by Walter Matthau who works to convince Reggie that Peter is not the man he claims to be.
So come join us for a Valentine’s Day of all-time great suspense love thrillers. On 35mm!
Best always,
