7:30pm NOSFERATU (1922, dir. F. W. Murnau, Kino Lorber, Germany, DCP)
Special Note: We’ll be showing F.W. Murnau’s eternal spooky horror classic with a live musical score by the Jack Curtis Dubowksy ensemble in the historic Million Dollar Theater Movie Palace.
It’s not Halloween nor a Secret Movie Club season if we don’t do a silent horror classic and have a live original musical score by our friends and partners the Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble. After such incredible evenings with Jack’s original scores for Sunrise and The Mark of Zorro, we wanted to return to the movie that started our partnership over three years ago, FW Murnau’s seminal vampire silent film masterpiece Nosferatu.
Murnau brought his very specific German Expressionist genius to the Dracula story creating a visually jaw dropping horror story that is as much metaphor for the seismic plagues and wars that overtake Europe as it is a gothic horror romance.
Set in the 1830’s, Nosferatu’s great asset (among many asset’s) is the completely committed (some have speculated mentally unhinged) performance of Max Schreck as Count Orlock (the Dracula character here). Schreck seems like he is actually a vampire who just happened to get cast in a movie rather than an actor playing a part. His look and uncanny dedication to the part set the template for a certain kind of inhuman immortal timeless vampire (lampooned hilariously in Taiki Waititi’s and Jermaine Clement’s What We Do In the Shadows).
Join us as you not only get a timeless silent film classic on the big screen in a movie palace but also a live and original musical score by a 9+ piece orchestra playing directly beneath the screen.
This is a Halloween night for the ages!
Best always,
