8pm MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S (1969, dir. Éric Rohmer, Janus, France, 110mns, DCP)
One of the most beautiful holiday movies ever made (and in some ways one of the most ambiguous and challenging) Eric Rohmer’s My Night at Maud’s deserves to be screened every holiday season along with It’s A Wonderful Life. This 1969 French movie was the fourth in Rohmer’s six part “Moral Tales” series. It follows conflicted Catholic Jean-Louis who, through strange happenstance, spends one long evening just before Christmas, talking with Maud, a recently divorced atheist. The two spend the entire night discussing God, no God, love, ethics. All leading to a ‘will they or won’t they’ climax that has quite surprising consequences.
My Night at Maud’s is one of the first movies to prove that conversation itself can be wildly cinematic. The spiritual heir of this movie today is most clearly Richard Linklater whose Before trilogy feels intensely inspired by this movie.
But My Night at Maud’s is much more than mere inspiration for later works. It truly is one of the greatest French New Wave movies from ANY of the New Wave directors. Complicated, funny, sexual, real, and deeply observant about how we make the best choices we can without the certitude of hindsight, it is a towering movie.
Interestingly, this Programmer has always debated whether Jean Louis and Maud made the right decisions in the movie. And this might be the point of the movie. So come pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa and watch one of the greatest holiday movies ever made.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
