Netflix Party: Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It

Part of our CINEMA IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS series. Friday, June 19, 2020 @ 7p, Netflix Streaming Service: SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT (1986 , Netflix, dir by Spike Lee, streaming, 84mns)

HOW TO: While we all work to be socially responsible during the age of coronavirus, Secret Movie Club is experimenting with news ways we can all come together as a community and watch great movies.

We want to keep this very reasonable since folks have to have Netflix to start with. So donate whatever works for you. $1 is fine with us.

Just make sure you download NETFLIX PARTY on a Chrome Browser. You'll see the initials NP in the upper right hand corner of browser after a succesful download.

Secret Movie Club will email the link for the Netflix Party at 30 minutes before showtime using the email you provide here. Click that link then click the NP in upper right hand corner. This will synch you to our screening. We will start the movie at exactly 5 minutes after the hour.

There will be a chat function that allows everyone to comment as we go.

The Secret Movie Club team will be offering trivia, history, insights, articles, deep dives throughout the movie(s). We're going to work to make this as rich a feast as possible utilizing the technology at hand.

Then we'll want your feedback immediately on how we can improve/make it better! This also will allow Secret Movie Clubbers from all over the world to join in on a virtual screening!

In 1986, Spike Lee burst into cinema consciousness like a firework and he's been here burning bright ever since.

Interestingly, for a director who is often associated with tackling racial and incendiary issues head on in a stylish, energetic, provocative way, Lee actually chose to make a laugh out loud romantic comedy (with a musical number!) for his debut feature.

Still, SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, which follows the life of New York free spirit Nola Darling and the three men she's seeing simultaneously (including a hilariously motormouth Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon), for all its light heartedness actually engages in core Spike Lee themes: female sexuality, contemporary blackness, vibrant narratives little afforded the black community in mainstream American cinema, etc.

More than anything, SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT immediately demonstrates the style, energy, raw talent Spike Lee has put on display the last 34 years. It's an electric filmmaking debut that Lee fully validated across his first decade with early films like DO THE RIGHT THING, JUNGLE FEVER, and finally MALCOM X (which we'll be screening Sat 6/20/20 @ 7pm).

We figured we'd showcase Lee's first and then his most recent movie (DA 5' BLOODS) on Friday night followed by one of his most complex and engaged movies MALCOM X the next night. We hope you'll join us for a mini-Spike Lee fest.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
