Netflix Party: 1973 original horror classic THE WICKER MAN

Part of our CINEMA IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS series. Saturday, July 18, 2020 @ 8p, Netflix Streaming Service: THE WICKER MAN (1973, dir by Robin Hardy/written by Anthony Schaeffer, streaming, UK, 100 mns)

HOW TO: While we all work to be socially responsible during the age of coronavirus, Secret Movie Club is experimenting with news ways we can all come together as a community and watch great movies.

We want to keep this very reasonable since folks have to have Netflix to start with. So donate whatever works for you. $1 is fine with us.

Just make sure you download NETFLIX PARTY on a Chrome Browser.

You'll see the initials NP in the upper right hand corner of browser after a succesful download.

Secret Movie Club will email the link for the Netflix Party at 30 minutes before showtime using the email you provide here. Click that link then click the NP in upper right hand corner. This will synch you to our screening. We will start the movie at exactly 5 minutes after the hour.

There will be a chat function that allows everyone to comment as we go.

The Secret Movie Club team will be offering trivia, history, insights, articles, deep dives throughout the movie(s). We're going to work to make this as rich a feast as possible utilizing the technology at hand.

Then we'll want your feedback immediately on how we can improve/make it better! This also will allow Secret Movie Clubbers from all over the world to join in on a virtual screening!

This week, we’re going to be looking at movies with some of the greatest twists of all time.  For our Netflix Watch party, we’re watching one that many consider in the top 5 of all-time great twist endings.

Conservative and sexually reserved Sergeant Howie comes to investigate a child who has gone missing on the strange remote Scottish Summerisle island.  He’s exceedingly put off by the libertine group of residents, lead by a hilariously over the top Christopher Lee, who engage in free love sex, pagan rituals, and behavior all together off putting to the detective.

As one of their biggest Pagan festivals of the year looms, Sergeant Howie begins to fear that the missing child may be a victim of this cult. He races to try to stop the next disappearance.

To say more. . .well. . .would be to ruin the twist!  A great movie twist (in this programmer’s opinion) has to accomplish two things. 1) When it happens and the truth is revealed, it should be so clever and intelligent that as an audience member you feel an almost shock of revelation. And 2)the overall movie should be so good that you can return to it despite knowing the twist.

THE WICKER MAN, we humbly submit, accomplishes both these things.  It is a horror movie with some pretty gonzo scenes so only join us if you’re a fan of the genre. But if you’re ready to have your mind fried like two eggs in a roadside diner at 7am, then join us for this all-time stone cold classic.
