7:30pm MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006, dir. Sofia Coppola, Sony, USA, 123mns, 35mm)
10pm SOMEWHERE (2010, dir. Sofia Coppola, Universal, USA, 98mns, 35mm)
We wrap up our Sofia Soiree series with two more Sofia Coppola bangers on 35mm.
First up may ultimately turn out to be Coppola’s masterpiece Marie Antoinette. It’s always funny how many directors’ finest movies are not fully understood upon release but, over time, reveal themselves to be masterworks.
Marie Antoinette, starring an amazing Kirsten Dunst in the title role, plays like a painfully veiled semi-autobiography of Coppola herself. Rather than portraying the doomed French Queen as superficial and vain, we see her from the inside-forced to marry a man she has never met, a pawn in the political machinations of her time, unable to even fully love or enjoy life the way she would like to if she wasn’t constantly in the public eye.
The movie is filled with brilliant anachronisms (including a wonderful ball powered by 80’s shoe gaze pop), poppy colors, and a deep soulfulness. Never falling back on expected beats or regurgitated historical anecdotes, Coppola’s Marie Antoinette instead plays like a fierce reclaiming of a woman’s agency and identity in spite of the petty forces of gossip and shallow tabloid fascination.
We follow this with another Coppola comedy-drama, the wildly underrated Somewhere which may just be the hidden crown jewel in Coppola’s body of work.
Playing almost as a kind of companion piece to Lost in Translation, here we see what may be a clever peek into the Sofia Coppola-Francis Ford Coppola daughter-father dynamic.
Recently divorced actor Johnny Marco stays and plays at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont when he gets an unexpected weekend visit from his eleven year old daughter, Cleo.
Rather than following expected beats of anger and reconciliation, we instead see a daughter and father spend time together both connecting and wanting to connect.
Very funny and full of Coppola’s very dry, understated humor, Somewhere ultimately plays as one of the great underrated hangout movies of the last fifteen years. We get a view of Hollywood, the movie industry, and relationships within it that feels very true and first hand.
Both of these movies are a must. On 35mm!
Best always,
