Tonight we honor the master Broadway composer/songwriter Stephen Sondheim with a double feature of the maestro at work.

First up is DA Pennebaker's amazing, fly on the wall ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING COMPANY 1 hour documentary. It's custom for the original cast of a Broadway musical to go into the studio to record the ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM of the songs for posterity.

In this doc, we actually get the chance to see Sondheim, Harold Prince, Elaine Stritch, and other amazing 1960's-1970's musical theater luminaries AT WORK on one of Sondheim's most beloved and revived works. It's the chance to see how the sausage is made and just what a workaholic and perfectionist Sondheim was in pursuit of "finishing the hat". He often used this phrase (from the song he wrote for Sunday in the Park with George) to describe the process of working on a creative project down to the very detail to get it right. Because the transcendence is in nailing the details.

We follow this up with Tim Burton's surprisingly dark and powerful adaptation of Sondheim's already dark and powerful Broadway musical Sweeney Todd. Todd tells the story of an exiled Barber (Johnny Depp in full commitment mode), driven mad with grief, because a covetous Judge (the always wonderful Alan Rickman) used his power to try to seduce the Barber's wife who he's told died shortly after Todd was forced into exile by the Judge. When Todd returns to London, he learns that now the Judge wants to seduce the Barber's daughter. Todd joins forces with the somewhat batty Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham-Carter) to get his revenge. Todd kills people and Mrs. Lovett bakes them in her pies. All in the pursuit of getting the Judge to sit in the barber's chair.

What's most surprising here is that Burton seems to rise to the occasion, realizing the material he's been given, to deliver one of his very best movies. Dark, unsettling, just like the source material, all building to a devastating climax.

So come join us for a double dose of the master-Stephen Sondheim-at his very best.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
