8pm ZOMBI 2 (1979, dir. Lucio Fulci, Italy, 91mns, 35mm)
10pm THE BEYOND (1981, dir. Lucio Fulci, Italy, 87mns, 35mm)
Like a twisted version of the Sound of Music song, one could sing “What do you do with a problem like Lu-cio?”
Lucio Fulci, known as the “Godfather of Gore”, was in some ways most akin to a kind of Italian Sam Peckinpah of Italian horror. Or maybe Peckinpah was the Lucio Fulci of American action movies. Both men were riven by internal conflicts that created wildly dynamic cinema.
In Fulci’s case, his hatred for the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church and many Italian moral poses lead him to make some of the most shocking, gory, confrontational-yet beautifully cinematic-movies of all time.
The misnomer if you’ve never seen Fulci movies is that their main appeal is how far they push the gore quotient. This is, after all, the man whose special effects supervisor was taken to court (when they made A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin) because people actually thought they had vivisected dogs who were still alive. In fact, they were animatronic and the supervisor proved it by bringing one of his creations to the court.
What makes Fulci movies so singular (and great) is that they are boundary pushing yet at the same time kind of grind house Hitchcocks. Fulci was a craftsman who knew how to make a damn good movie. And he did so time and time again.
Tonight we kick off with Zombi 2 (so called to lead the American audience to think it was a sequel to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead; known in Italy as Zombi). Zombi 2 tells the story of a Caribbean island where voodoo has caused the dead to rise again and attack the living. Even if you’ve never seen this movie, you may know its cover: a near-skeletal zombie whose right eye appears consumed by worms. Consider yourself warned. It only gets crazier from there.
We follow it up with The Beyond. A wild and fun Southern Gothic about a woman who takes over a hotel in the American south that was host to unspeakable murders (of course) and may be the gateway to hell.
In fact, The Beyond is part of Fulci’s GATES OF HELL trilogy which also includes City of the Living Dead and The House By the Cemetery.
If Bava is the stylish fashion maven of genre, Fulci is the no-holds barred craftsman willing to push boundaries to make a singular movie.
Come join us to watch two Italian horror classics. On 35mm!
Best always,
