7:30pm LEGEND (1985, dir. Ridley Scott, Universal, USA, 89mns, 35mm - Theatrical Cut)

Ridley Scott has made a career out of building worlds others thought impossible. Scott seems to love a cinematic challenge whether that’s recreating 18th century Europe (The Duellists), “old space” (Alien), a noir future (Blade Runner), or ancient imperial Rome (Gladiator).

One of his most committed visual feasts is the Tom Cruise starring Legend. Here Scott goes full 1980’s Lord of the Rings to bring his story of how Jack (Cruise), a determined man of the forest, fights through a world of fantastic fairies, unicorns, goblins to confront the evil demon Darkness (Tim Curry in possibly the craziest makeup job ever imposed on an actor), who has abducted Jack’s love, the Princess Lili (Ferris Bueller’s Mia Sara).

Scott is in full 1980’s lush 35mm practical effects mode here and Legend could easily be seen as the final movie in a kind of sci-fi fantasy practical effects trilogy that includes Alien and Blade Runner. It’s instructive to see the wildly charismatic Tom Cruise (only 22 at the time of filming) a year before Top Gun would change everything forever, giving it his all.

We also see how amazing Tim Curry is at playing scenery chewing villains and anti-heroes. Even beneath layers of incredible demon latex (with huge horns), Curry is able to deliver a performance of mischievous impishness.

Scott would later use unicorn shots from Legend in his director’s cuts of Blade Runner, further linking the two movies.

Come join us for this rare opportunity to see Ridley Scott at the height of his 1980’s world building powers in this all practical effects fantasy cult classic. On 35mm! Please note this is the theatrical cut with the Tangerine Dream score.

Best always,
