2pm KNIFE IN THE WATER (1962, dir. Roman Polanski, Janus, Poland, 94mns, 35mm)

Every season, we work to screen at least one movie as part of our Take a Chance Cinema series that we hope is a discovery and/or revelation for our audience.

Today, we’re excited to screen, on 35mm(!), the debut Polish feature film of Roman Polanski, Knife in the Water.

Polanski burst onto the international cinema scene with this, his very first movie, a taut 90 minute psychological thriller that stars just three people(!). Bickering married couple Krystyna and Andrzej pick up a young Hitchhiker (never named) on their way to a lake to take their small boat out for a sail.

A series of psychological frustrations between the married couple cause them to invite the Hitchhiker to join them on their afternoon jaunt.

Bit by bit, tension mounts as we see this triangle constantly break out and form different alliances. There are always two of the characters against at least one of the other character. Sometimes the Married Couple makes fun of the Young Man’s lack of education. Sometimes the Young Man and the Young Wife make fun of the Husband’s other generation stodginess.

But bit by bit the taunts and mind games escalate to something truly psychologically, sexually, and physically dangerous.

A master class in what incredibly talented moviemakers can do with limited resources (the script was co-written by EO writer/director Jerzy Skolimowski), Knife in the Water is a classic of international cinema. Made when Poland was still under fairly tight Communist occupied rule in the early 1960’s, its subversive modernity and startling power took the movie world by storm and catapulted Polanski towards his landmark movies Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby, and Chinatown among others.

Come join us for this rare opportunity to see this classic movie on 35mm!

Best always,

*Please note that though we strive to always show titles on 35mm film if advertised, we may have to screen digitally if the print we receive is in such bad shape or if we don't receive the print in time because of a shipping delay. We will do our best to alert the audience. When this does occur, we will offer each ticket holder who chooses not to attend a complimentary ticket to a future event in exchange. (Disclaimer: Good for 90 days – Future screening must have available tickets, cannot be a fundraiser, and must be comparably priced)
