Kieslowski's THREE COLORS: BLUE 35mm @ The Secret Movie Club Theater

  • Secret Movie Club 1917 Bay Street Los Angeles, CA, 90021 United States (map)

For the next three Saturdays, we'll be screening Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy on 35mm at the Secret Movie Club Theater. You can purchase single or series tickets!

After making the stunning, overpowering Dekalogue for Polish television, Kieslowski and his frequent brilliant co-writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz, were offered the opportunity to make a trilogy of movies based on the three colors/values of the French flag: BLUE (liberty), WHITE (equality), RED (fraternity).

As they did with the 10 commandments in Dekalog, the two Polish filmmakers turned in a trilogy that comes at these values in the most unexpected, stunning, complex of ways.

First up, we get the story of Julie (Juliette Binoche) who achieves "liberty" unwillingly when her husband and child are killed in a car accident at the beginning of the movie.

As Julie struggles with the curse of having survived, she tries to completely disappear into . anonymity and the world. But a local young boy and a stripper strangely force her to re-engage with the world.

A stunning "throw down the gauntlet" first movie, Blue is a beautiful and brutal meditation on what liberty really means. And it sets the stage beautifully for the next two installments in the trilogy.

Join us for one of the most ambitious thematic trilogies of the last 40 years.
