One of the most fascinating voices to come out of the last five years in independent cinema has been that of Jim Cummings, who has found a way to write, direct, and act in three tremendous movies.
Working at an incredible pace of almost one film a year.
Tonight, we’re honored to have Mr. Cummings at the Secret Movie Club Theater to take us through how he has been able to make a career as a filmmaker during one of the most transitional and difficult times in moviemaking ever. So bring your questions and your notepad. This is a night for moviemakers everywhere.
We start off with Mr. Cummings’ South by Southwest Grand Jury prize winner Thunder Road. Adapted from a single take short film, Thunder Road tells the story of small town police officer Jim (Cummings) and his day-to-day struggles with his job, his family, his children, and his substance abuse issues. Here Cummings shows his incredible ability to weave together insight, an understanding of the current crisis of the heartland, and comedy to express why so many folks in the country feel adrift and angry.
We follow this up with Cummings’ ambitious, hilarious horror comedy The Wolf of Snow Hollow. It co-stars the great Robert Forester (Jackie Brown, Twin Peaks, The Descendants) in his final film role. Here, Cummings’ slyly seems to bring over his Jim character to John, an alcoholic police officer who refuses to believe that his town is being terrorized by werewolf attacks.
Cummings combines humor, metaphor, tension & horror to again examine how resentment, anger, mistrust & substance abuse issues are roiling small towns across the country.
Finally we wrap up with Cummings’ most recent feature The Beta Test, just released last year. Here Cummings trades in the small town Midwest for the vicious, selfish & narcissistic belly of the beast: Hollywood.
Cummings plays Jordan Hines, a self-absorbed talent agent, who engages in a secret sex rendezvous by invitation where both parties are blindfolded, only to watch everything unravel from those actions around him.
Again Cummings builds on his strengths while tackling something new: here a kind of sexual-comedy-thriller-drama on self-destructive personalities in the current moment.
One of the few moviemakers to successfully move between several of the most contentious currents in American society, Jim Cummings is staking a part of filmmaking both as a moviemaker with something to say and as a moviemaker who has found a way to say it and get his movies done.
Join us for a great night, bring your questions, and let’s learn from someone on the journey how we can start our own.
