7:30pm TOO LATE (2016, wri & directed by Dennis Hauck, USA, 107mns, 35mm) + 4mns of 70mm footage (printed on 35mm) shot by Halyna Hutchins for the feature AL'S BRAND.
9:30pm Live acoustic set by filmmaker Dennis Hauck
Tonight is a special night at the Secret Movie Club. The spotlight shines on moviemaker/musician Dennis Hauck who has made with his team one of the more audacious indie features in recent years-the John Hawkes & Robert Forster starring TOO LATE which we screen on 35mm!
Dennis has also kindly chosen Secret Movie Club to debut four minutes of 70mm footage (here screened on 35mm) shot by cinematographer Halyna Hutchins for Dennis's upcoming movie AL'S BRAND before Ms. Hutchin's tragic death in 2021. This gives us an opportunity to showcase Ms. Hutchin's tremendous work.
TOO LATE is part of the tradition/sub-genre of struggling Los Angeles Private Eyes on a case that is as much about their own redemption as the subject of the mystery itself. Think THE LONG GOODBYE, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, INHERENT VICE to name just a few.
John Hawkes plays beat up, spiritually adrift private eye Mel Sampson in a labyrinthine noir story that jumps forwards and backwards in time as Mel tries to find a missing woman and get his act together. Each sequence is an amazing 35mm oner (shot all in one take) with great supporting turns from character actors like Robert Forester. Hauck takes the approach Alfred Hitchcock employed in ROPE and goes even further by working to make each "Act" (the story is told in 5), one shot.
Great movies only happen with great risk-taking. TOO LATE is an example of filmmakers committing to 35mm, performance, and atmosphere.
We follow the program with a live in-house acoustic set by Dennis as he kicks off his 2023 concert tour. Mr. Hauck and his team are examples of moviemakers committed to creativity and daring in difficult filmmaking times.
Come join us for a special night on 35mm features, tributes to Ms. Hutchins' cinematography work, and live music.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
