7:45pm JACKASS 3 (2011, dir. Jeff Tremaine, Paramount, USA, 94mns, 35mm)

9:45pm JACKASS FOREVER (2022, dir. Jeff Tremaine, Paramount, USA, 96mns, Format Unconfirmed)

When Jeff Tremaine, Johnny Knoxville, and Spike Jonze created Jackass at the turn of the century for MTV, how could they know they were creating a pop culture and cinematic juggernaut?

Like the short lived 2000-2002 TV show, the Jackass movies find a core group of 9 folks doing more and more unbelievable (yet pretty damn clever and funny) dangerous stunts, pranks, challenges that should for all intents and purposes result in death or brain damage.

The Jackass movies are really enjoyable and very cinematic. A strange mix between Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy (since you get to watch these knuckleheads age over 20 years), jaw dropping real stunts, and ridiculous juvenile behavior, the Jackass franchise does what movies are supposed to do. It constantly surprises you. You never know where it’s going. You find yourself caring deeply about the characters. It keeps you in suspense. And you laugh constantly. You go on a journey for sure.

A journey where you sometimes dry heave.

We argue first and foremost that the Jackass franchise (and yes, we’re showing all four movies across two successive Thursdays) deserves reconsideration as actual cinematic art.

The constant oversight and creative input of Spike Jonze (whom we are featuring in our The Jones Jonze series playing on the Fridays just after the Jackass Thursdays) may have had something to do with the unexpected sweetness and humanism that courses through these movies.

So. . .please be ready for some really gross stuff (the drinking of actual sweat in Jackass 3 almost caused this programmer to throw up at the same time he was laughing). But also be ready to be surprised at just how clever and filmic the Jackass series is.

We’re showing Jackass and Jackass Number Two on Thursday, January 19, 2022 and Jackass 3 and Jackass Forever on Thursday, January 26, 2022.

If you need some laughter and escapism, grab a pass and see all four!

Best always,
