11am IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946, dir. Frank Capra, Paramount, USA, 130mns, 35mm)
We are thrilled to announce that we have been able to secure a 35mm print of Frank Capra’s and Jimmy Stewart’s holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life for our traditional Christmas Eve screening. And we get to screen it at the Million Dollar Theater Movie Palace!
It’s A Wonderful Life is one of those rare movies that only deepens and gets richer and better every time you see it.
Originally received lukewarmly by a post-WWII audience that may have been seeking darker fare, It’s A Wonderful Life has been discovered, re-discovered, and shared with multi-plegenerations of American families.
Jimmy Stewart’s George Bailey makes a rash decision one Christmas Eve in the belief that it is his only way to save his family but the prayers of those who love him reach higher ears and an angel is dispatched to help prevent him from making the worst decision of his life.
But until that fateful moment, we see all the key moments of George Bailey’s life from childhood to just before the fateful Christmas Eve.
Both co-writer/director Capra and star Stewart (along with many of the cast members) had just returned shaken, forever changed by their service during World War II. And It’s A Wonderful Life pulsates with a darker understanding of the stresses, anxieties, and worries of a post-World War II America. Yet, at the same time, it taps into the hope, hard work, and essential goodness that is the best of what we aspire to be.
Both Capra’s and Stewart’s personal favorite of all the movies they did in their long and storied careers, It’s A Wonderful Life also features all-time great performances from many of Hollywood’s greatest talents including Lionel Barrymore as the Scrooge-like Mr. Potter who will stop at nothing to try to destroy George Bailey, Donna Reed as Mary, George’s resilient and strong wife, and Thomas Mitchell as Billy, George’s forgetful business partner and Uncle.
It’s rare that a movie swings for the fences when it comes to the transcendent and human and actually hits that home run. It’s A Wonderful Life (along with Seven Samurai and 2001) may have one of the greatest third acts in all of movie history.
So come bring the family and start Christmas Eve day off right with this all time Hollywood classic. On 35mm. In a movie palace.
Best always,
