7:30pm INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (2013, dir. Joel and Ethan Coen, Swank, USA, 105mns, Digital)

9:30pm DON'T LOOK BACK (1967, dir. D.A. Pennebaker, Janus, USA, 96mns, Digital)

One of the Coen Brothers’ greatest movies is also one of their most strangely idiosyncratic. Inside Llewyn Davis follows fictional Greenwich Village 1960’s folk musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaak in a star-making role) across a week in his life as he chases after an ever-illusive fame in the folk rock scene while alienating almost every single person he meets.

Llewyn Davis continues the Coen Brothers’ occasional foray into exploring musical worlds-here the 1960’s Beatnik folk scene that launched the careers of the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul, and Mary and many others. In fact, Davis is loosely based on cult folkie Dave Rock.

But the Coens, as they often are wont to do, are going to something deeper here than meets the eye. While the movie is hilariously funny and features yet another brilliant supporting turn by Coen regular John Goodman (as a heroin-addicted queer Jazz musician), it really seems to turn on how our actions and decisions in every aspect of our lives can affect other aspects of our lives. And how stubbornness can sometimes be a virtue and sometimes be our doom.

Bob Dylan himself (in a way) makes a very important cameo. . .but you’ll need to see the movie to understand the full importance of his presence.

We follow this with the amazing 1967 Bob Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back by D.A. Pennebaker which followed Dylan on his meteoric rise to stardom and UK tour of 1965 right around the time he was about to go electric. If Inside Llewyn Davis is about all the “almost” or “not quites” of American music, Bob Dylan is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, success stories in all of American music.

Ironically, Dylan never liked nor really wanted to court fame or his reputation as a generation’s voice. And Don’t Look Back shows Dylan in all his famed prickliness. Still, for all of Dylan’s odd idiosyncrasies, he remains one of the greatest singer-songwriters America has ever produced. And this documentary shows that collision of an artist who just wants to write and perform music with that Hydra beast called “fame”.

We hope these two movies together form an interesting mirror in front of and on the other side of the looking glass.

Best always,
